Graduate School of Health Management Toru Takebayashi
We introduce two of our active public health projects in Tsuruoka region, Yamagata Prefecture. One is Metabolomic Cohort Study, which started in 2012 to follow up 11,000 enrolled residents over 25 years. One of the unique features of this cohort study is combining Metabolomic profiling analysis with other biological and life-style data. The other project, Karada-kan is a unique community-based health promotion and patient support project. Our mission is to enhance the quality of life of the community dwellers. Our core activities are 1) information support for citizens' and patients' decision making regarding disease treatment and selfcare, 2) providing attractive learning opportunities, and 3) Promoting peer support and sharing experiences of patients.

This section introduces the results of graduation projects in the 2020 Narukawa Laboratory. In their graduation projects, students create works that transcend the boundaries of design such as architecture, space, interior, product and graphic design. The common philosophy of Narukawa Lab is to solve the engineering question geometrically in their various themes. This characteristic of Narukawa Lab has been cultivated and refined through successive projects and graduation projects. With regard to the theme that they have chosen, they will identify the problems that they are currently facing and propose a design to solve them through their works.

In the Computational Creativity Lab, our approach for researching human creativity is developing and observing computer-generated works which externalize human creativity as a computational model rather than just observing things which were made by humans or the process of human creation itself. Specifically, we are researching and developing AI (Artificial Intelligence) that can perform and generate music, movies, and graphic design. By observing the things generated by these AI, we are able to explore what creativity is and how humans can extend their creativity by finding features and getting inspiration from the generated works.

Are you familiar with the term biodiversity? People's lives depend on the many blessings of nature. These are called ecosystem services. Since the Great East Japan Earthquake, there has been a growing trend to focus on flood mitigation and its application to disaster prevention and disaster reduction. However, much of Japan's nature is secondary nature that has been maintained by human hands, and therefore human intervention is essential for the benefit of ecosystem services. Why don't we all think about how to interact with nature for the realization of a sustainable society?

A parallel bar sample model fixed to a force platform was used to simulate the separation of the hands. The force acting on the parallel bar was measured and the frictional force was estimated. I also conducted interviews with the players. The results showed that the players preferred natural honey rather than processed honey. In addition, the change in content of pollen in honey influenced to the player's subjective assessment. It was suggested that the frictional force may vary with the amount of pollen contained in natural honey.

In gymnastics parallel bars, friction between hands and parallel bars is important for the gymnasts. In my study, I have been explored to find a honey with high anti-slip performance.

This consortium is exploring the application of 3D printers to the sports and health fields. The development of wheelchair athletics gloves has passed through the Rio de Janeiro Paralympics, and we are supporting athletes aiming for the Tokyo Paralympics. We are also developing competition-specific products for surface rubber, which is also the key to glove performance. Currently, we are developing gloves for beginners with an emphasis on safety in order to broaden the base of wheelchair athletics. Furthermore, we are promoting activities toward social practice aiming at a cycle in which people with disabilities themselves make equipment for people with disabilities with a 3D printer.

Our laboratory is conducting research toward the realization of healthy longevity, mainly from the viewpoint of metabolism. There are various themes such as bile acids, gut flora, cancer, and central nervous system, and since the study group focuses on experiments, each of them is conducting research while utilizing the time other than the study group. In the experiments, we use mice, fruit flies, nematodes, etc. as model animals and conduct various in vivo tests. Using functional natural substances, we are conducting a wide range of research in the fields of non-illness and anti-aging.
