Workshop to Overcome Language Barriers in SFC

Person in Charge of the Project : Yumi SugiharaYumi Sugihara Lab. and Japanese Language Section gave a lecture in order to overcome language barriers in SFC with a collaboration of AIS (Association for International Students) in the spring semester 2017. In the lecture, we held a workshop where students can understand linguistic and cultural diversity in SFC, learn the concept of using "Easy Japanese" instead of using other languages and have experiences with using "Easy Japanese".

Person in Charge of the Project : Takao TomonoWe exhibit both our research outcomes on Japanese language education and our efforts on learning supports in Keio SFC. SFC Japanese section offers not only Japanese language courses but also learning opportunities for students with different cultural backgrounds in several ways. The students also can receive a support from TAs (teaching assistants) and SAs (student assistants), whereas TAs and SAs can be given a chance to see their communication skills objectively through some joint activities, such as Japanese tutoring services and projects where international students or returnees play a role of "instructors".

Japanese Language Learning in SFC and Disaster Prevention in Multicultural Inclusive Society

Person in Charge of the Project : Takao TomonoWe exhibit the progress report of our project about "Japanese Language Learning in SFC and Disaster Prevention in Multicultural Inclusive Society". Since this academic year 2017-2018, Japanese Language Section in SFC has given a priority to designing a learning environment that international students and returnees can understand disaster preventions in Japan linking with Japanese language learning. Our goal is not only to create the environment in which they can live without fear about disasters, but also to cultivate their ability to respond to disasters.

Person in Charge of the Project : Yumi SugiharaWe have faced with several problems caused by multicultural communication and have sought for the solutions for these questions individually or through several activities in SFC. We focus on Japanese language education as one of the solutions and exhibit our studies and some activities regarding it. Main topics are as follows: Japanese language support for international students at the elementary level of Japanese in SFC, learning support for the language minority students at the elementary school, "half" people's identity, acceptance of highly skilled foreign professionals and the social bias brought by the media.
