Research on sleep and mental health of nurses engaged in shift work

The present conditions and problems of sleep of nurses engaged in shift workIn the present age, there are many factors linked to sleep disorders such as population aging, diversification of lifestyle, disorder of life rhythm in the night society, and labor problems such as overwork.Sleep disorders caused by nurse shift work are a serious problem. Among the associations are the accumulation of fatigue, health problems, and the decline in work quality. Therefore, in this project, we focus on nurses engaged in shift work and explain the current situation and issues regarding sleep.

The relationship between sleeping state, daily life stress, mental health in nursing students.

About 20% of Japanese people and about 80% of university students have some sleep problems. In the social background such as Internet society and overwork, sleep is important issue directly linked to people's health and quality of life. Sleep state is closely associated with the onset and prevention of depression and affect mental health. Therefore, it is important to improve our sleep state in order to improve our mental health and live lively. This project presents the outcome of a study which examined the relationship between sleep state, daily life stress, sleep hygiene behaviors and mental health in nursing students.

Nurse's involvement in establishing relationship with alcohol dependent patients

Patients diagnosed as alcoholic carry not only physical problems caused by alcohol but also social problems regarding family life and work. Although recovery from alcoholism is possible, it is not easy for the patients to accept their illness and to continue abstinence from alcohol. It is important for nurses to establish a relationship of trust with the patient and set treatment goals in order to work together towards recovery. In this project, I will report the result of a literature review of the nurse's involvement in establishing a relationship with patients diagnosed as alcoholics.

Nursing care for patients with schizophrenia repeating hospitalization

Based on the principle of Visions in Reform of Mental Health and Medical Welfare, community life support for people with mental disorder is enhanced. Patients with schizophrenia have various difficulties including lack of insight into their illness and problems of interpersonal relationships and medical treatment. However, relapse due to immature coping skills and thus repeated hospitalization is not uncommon. Hospitalization is an opportunity for patients to understand their illness better, as well as acquire coping skills to live with illness. I will report the result of a literature review on nursing care for patients with schizophrenia repeating hospitalization.

Literature review of support for nurses caring for elderly patients with dementia

The number of elderly people with dementia is increasing in Japan and it is estimated that one in five elderly people will have dementia in 2025. Patients with dementia are prone to developing physical disease, therefore increasing number of elderly patients with dementia are getting hospitalized in acute hospitals. It is reported that nurses are experiencing difficulties dealing with patients with dementia presenting various psychiatric symptoms and behavioral problems. Supporting such nurses is an important issue. I will report the result of a literature review on the current situation of support for nurses caring for elderly patients with dementia.
