SFC believes that sharing its achievements with the public is one of its greatest obligations. In order to do so, SFC holds the SFC Open Research Forum every year, presenting their results far and wide to all of society. In this forum, future prospects and results of many ongoing research projects at SFC are introduced to industries, national and local governments through exhibitions and sessions.

In 2015, countries agreed upon the “shape of the world” to be realized by 2030. These are the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which aim to end poverty, ensure healthy lives, achieve gender equality, and promote employment and decent work while solving the problems of food and water for a sustainable society. In order for us to achieve these goals, it is critical that we solve the problems of the earth, including climate change and loss of biodiversity, and build a sustainable relationship with the planet.
As all of these issues are interrelated, it is important that we use a holistic approach with systems thinking, as well as solve current problems by working backwards from a desirable future with what is called "backcasting."
SFC has been employing these approaches ever since its establishment, and our future-minded students continue to tackle issues in this way. When it comes to envisioning the future society of the SDGs and beyond, there is no place better than SFC.
SFC is always several steps ahead of our future society with the research it conducts. Focusing on the SDGs’ vision of society in the future is what enables us to see our world’s problems in the present and then respond to society’s needs. It is this approach that will become the major driving force of future change.
A multitude of ways to achieve future change are presented at the SFC Open Research Forum. We believe that we must improve the present while seeking out what is best for the future of humanity and the planet. Join us at the forum and let our discussions form the seeds of the future from the DNA of SFC.
