Learning from extraordinary abilities of nature: tardigrades and spider silk

Darwinian evolution creates exceptions to survive unexpected natural selections, with extraordinary abilities unsurpassed by artificial technologies. Tardigrades are a group of microscopic eight-legged animals known for their extremotolerance, including extreme heat and cold, extreme pressure, ionizing radiation. One species even survived direct exposure to space vacuum and UV-C for ten days. Spider silks are proteins that exhibit extraordinary mechanical properties including high tensile strengths, extensibilities, and exceptional toughness, with potential applications in industry as renewable materials. We employed the state-of-the-art advanced biosciences technologies to elucidate the mechanisms behind these extraordinary abilities of nature.
