Embracing Risks

Person in Charge of the Project : Michio Umegaki
The underlying theme of our projects is that we live with risks. At the core is the simple question: How conscious are we of the impending threats of disruptions in our daily routines? As our living environment is always changing, and as our ability to predict is woefully limited, we risk inevitably becomes part of our life. We conduct our research in two communities: Susono in Shizuoka, Japan; and Phu Cat, Binh Dinh, in Vietnam. In the former, we examine how people live their life with the risk of volcanic eruptions of Mt, Fuji. What are the marks, if any, of the risk perception in their daily life? In the latter, the community, exposed to the wartime spray of toxic herbicides (dioxin), we examine how people in the environment have confronted the risky choice of giving birth.
