Institute for Advanced Biosciences of Keio University was founded in 2001 in Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture. The institute has developed innovative state-of-art biotechnologies such as Synthetic spider silk, Cancer screening by saliva, and Diagnosis of Major Depression Disease by blood test, and 6 spin-out venture companies were born to date. On the adjoining land, SPA Hotel SUIDEN Terrace and the indoor playground facility Kids Dome SORAI have been built. Both are made of wood and designed by Shigeru Ban.
